When I was 16, I was diagnosed with an extremely rare, aggressively benign tumor in my right temporal lobe. I think it was probably around that time that I started thinking of my body as a broken machine.
I started running regularly in August of 2012 because I knew if I could run 13.1 miles, I would have a good excuse to go to Disney World.
A year ago this weekend, I completed my first half marathon, the Disney Princess Half. Since then, I have run 8 half marathons. I have another three scheduled for the upcoming months.
I still think of my body as a machine. But it sure as hell isn’t broken.
